There's nothing like a gentle sun filled space in Winter. A quiet spot to sip a morning cup of something warm.
Our homes are our sanctuary - especially in these cooler months. A perfect time to cosy up with a great blanket, your favourite cushions and if life permits ... a pocket of time to indulge in a heart warming read.
This week, (amongst unpacking our new season Marimekko edit) we got to chatting in store about our favourite reads - both titles and styles.
Reading is my very favourite past-time. From the moment I finish a book, I’m on to the next one. It’s my way to wind down at the end of the day and there isn’t a night that goes by that I’m not reading in bed. I’ve taken to reading books on my iPhone, partly to ensure I have a good read with me at all times, and partly so I don’t annoy Andrew by keeping a lamp on late into the night! To date, I have close to 200 books in my digital library.
It’s hard for me to pick a favourite title as I read across such a diverse range of genres. But here are a few of my recommendations:
If you love a good crime story or thriller, take a look at The Dry by Jane Harper. Set in rural Victoria, it’s a story that will keep you guessing to the end.
I recently finished the Maze Runner dystopian trilogy by James Dashner. I’m generally one to read a book before watching a movie and this series was such a page-turner, I jumped straight into watching the films to get a second fix.
Liane Moriarty, author of Big Little Lies. I think I’ve read all her books and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Highly recommended!
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. This one has really stuck in my mind long after the final page.
The next book I have lined up is Go Like Hell by A J Baime. I’m excited for the release of the biographical film ‘Ford v Ferrari’ later in the year so thought I’d get in and read the story behind what is tipped to be a great movie!
The experience of reading to me is very therapeutic – a physical book, a cup of hot tea, coffee, (or glass of wine!), and snuggled up in bed or a quiet space. That said, I also love stories so intensely good that I can ready anywhere, anytime, or binge-read well into the night. I try to read across a broad range of genres depending on whether I feel like an escape, a thrill, or am wanting to learn about a certain person or topic. Without sounding cliché, it is really hard to choose just one favourite! The books that I would re-read or gift to a friend are generally a good sign, so here are a few recommendations ;
I’m a big fan of fantasy, so George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is a must, even though they aren’t finished yet! If you’re into self-development The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz has some great life lessons and if you’re a creative, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert is full of inspiration and wisdom. I’m a big Elizabeth Gilbert fan in general and actually just received her latest fictional book City of Girls so that’s my first Winter novel sorted.
Reading is such a treat in my life these days. Whether it's 20 minutes at a cafe with a style magazine - bring back print!! - or a chapter of Fiction before I fall asleep, reading makes my life better. Whenever I read it reminds me to try to fit it in more often!
I've just finished a book titled The Lace Weaver, by Lauren Chater. It was a romance/political history piece about two characters living between Russia & Estonia at the beginning of the second World War. Reading it reminded me of how lucky we are to have all of the simple things in our lives (so often taken for granted) - our homes, education, freedom of speech, food, family and work. On a less reflective note, I've just bought the latest LOVE magazine - which I can't wait to get in to!
