What a treat to be able to connect with Elk Founder & Designer, Marnie Goding about her creative inspiration.
What does creativity mean to you?
It is an expression of yourself. We each are naturally creative in our own way. For me, it's an outlet, it’s a way of conveying a message or telling a story through visual cues. I am naturally inspired by my surrounds. Through what I read, watch and listen to. Creativity is in the every day and can come in many forms and not only in the obvious. Woodwork, cooking, story telling, putting outfits together, cooking – there are so many forms of creativity.
What inspires you creatively?
Travel, music and film are my main sources of inspiration. Travel particularly because time and new experiences give way to freedom of thought. The daily grind sees life almost on rotation and so getting out to see, feel and find new sources of creativity are the times I feel the best ideas come through.
What is your favourite creative space?
In the stock rooms and store rooms of our suppliers! I love nothing more than combing through boxes of off cuts or through racks of materials. These discarded piles and archives are actually an endless source of new ideas. I love nothing more than being left to let the creative juices flow – its one of the most exciting parts of my design role.
Do you have a special creative process you follow in the creation of your collections?
We start always with a story, a theme or a concept. This dictates the print development which in turn provides us with a colour palette. From there the shapes and silhouettes are designed and material selection follows soon after. Always we try to keep in touch with our customers to understand their needs and wants. As a designer for a brand like ELK where we produce a wide variety of product but not high quantities, creating collections that work together not only by season but also across different seasons is a challenge we enjoy.
If more people lived creatively, how do you think our world would be different?
Perhaps it would simply be more individual and less competitive. So much influence now comes from social media and consciously and sub consciously effects the way people think, live and dress. Its almost a copy cat syndrome which can be dangerous. So if everybody trusted in their own creativity and stopped trying to imitate others then it would be a much more colourful world full of true characters.
