In Focus – Urban Style
Urban ::  adjective [ in, relating to, or characteristic of a town or city. ]

Part of the blessing of travel is discovering the urban spaces of a city.

The often indescribable (that's why you have to visit) feeling that arises when you blend aged architecture with hospitality, art, people and business.
When considering urban locations to host our latest editorial shoot there was a singular clear choice.  Gold Coast's latest boutique hotel, The Island.

We're just chuffed that right here on our doorstep, is a meticulous space that perfectly mixes both the emerging urban culture of the Gold Coast with the very best of international trends.

Post a year long internal renovation, The Island is a local hotel that oozes unique contemporary style.

From the time we entered the welcome space, to the reception desk, to our room ... we were cooing in a way we've not done in a Gold Coast hotel ... umm, ever.

So we thought we'd share a few of the urban details that we loved.

Stiff 'hotel uniforms' and official name badges be ... nowhere.  The team at The Island are real, (suprisingly young!), super nice and über stylish.  Without compromising on professionalism in any way, they reminded us of the extra cool concierge teams in downtown NYC.

[ Bed setting at The Island - restyled with In Bed Linen ]

Come on, it's the first thing everyone does when they visit a hotel ... handbags down and a generous belly flop onto the bed to test comfort.  Full points were given to the King size setting at The Island.  The pillows were plump to perfection and (although we pulled them off for our bed restyle!) the sheets were LUSH.

We styled the bed with our new In Bed linen and Slip silk pillow casings.

Clean lines. Quality craftmanship.  Considered fabrications, textures and contemporary colours.  In our opinion, each furniture piece at The Island was stand out.  Whilst maintaining a minimalistic space they included the perfect chaise lounge, Scandinavian style table settings, desks and sitting chairs.

We styled the table setting with  In Bed Linens, Marimekko cushions & ceramics.

[ Bathroom setting at The Island styled with Aesop skincare - available in store at Dwell ]

Call us odd, but hey, let's get it out in the open ... We've got a thing for bathrooms.  And at The Island, they're very cool.  The white wall tiles were impeccably laid and pared with the black grouting, the space had a distinct vintage, industrial feel.
We loved the raised, exposed sinks and matt black accents on the taps.

We styled the bathroom space with our Aesop Skincare, Iittala glassware and Marimekko towels.

Maybe it's the Queenslander coming out in us, but when we stay at a hotel, we think it's best if you're able to get outside.  The Island had sweet, petite balcony's with charming breeze walls, reminiscent of a 1950s Californian Bungalow style.
We sipped our S'well bottles and enjoyed the view (enjoying every architecture style from 1950 to 2010).  Oh, and the ocean.  That was nice too.

[ Abundant balconies at The Island ]

If you've romped about the Gold Coast for an amount of time you'll still be able to evision (probably with a host of Schoolies swinging from the balconies) the old "Islander" - the unmissably pink hotel in the heart of Surfers Paradise.
We loved that (although the concept, internal fit out and service is now unrecognizable) the renovated boutique space maintained a nod to it's past heritage with the brickwork and signage.
To us, that's what makes something truly urban.

So urban.
